Being vegan..what does it mean to you?

Given thjat is has been proved that plants cry out to others when in pain does the vegan argument even mean anyt hing anymore.
People used to say fish feel no pain but anyone who has taken a fish out of water knows that is just crap.
Let's just pretend only animals have any sort of sense, that will make it all better?
Sorry we have to eat and have to eat a nutritional diet.
Now I eat hardly any meat (pretty much just chicken liver) and not much fish (salmon or my prefered proper trout that is similer and better when I can get it). Veg is great but the insanist of saying there is no issue there is just wrong. choose your wrong or do not eat and die.
milk/eggs are things and do not kill so are probably better all around. still some plants willl die after a year too.
just do not pretened things are as simple as you think.0 -
At the moment I think a lot of people are trying it because it's a bit fashionable! I've seen lots of adverts recently for vegetarian and vegan foods so it's definitely bringing money in ( also noticed in small print that some products might not actually be vegan or veggie because of how they are cooked!).
My view is everyone should be free to eat / not eat whatever they choose. The only aspect I dislike are the people who attention seek or make out that eating animals is disgusting when up till recently they did it themselves! New veggies and vegans seem to be worse at doing this. I've been vegetarian for 30 years as I just don't like the thought of eating animals. I'm under no illusion that me not eating a burger or piece of chicken is saving any animals though!1 -

Why oh why are the like of KFC and McD even trying to go there...its not what vegan is about I don't think.
It's obviously not veggie or vegan 100%. It's more aimed at meat eaters wanting to reduce their meat consumption while still having their favourite junk (guess not for health reasons as they are still eating crap food but for environmental reasons or sth.)finally tea total but in still in (more) debt (Oct 25 CC £1800, loan £6453, mortgage £59,924/158,000)0 -
Look I have no issue with vegetables and vegan foods, I have a bit of a thing for Aldi's vegan nuggets. Also if you like the taste of it that's great. However please don't pretend you can get the same taste as meat. There really isn't a vegan 'meat' product out there that tastes the same as the actual thing.
If they ever do develop a vegan meat substitute that's so accurate I can't tell the difference I'll give up meat. Until then I'll stick with my current diet.
Totally agree. I'd rather eat a bean burger than a so called Meat-less Meatball made from soya.
I'm all for vegan/plant based food and some of it (especially the dishes not using substitutes) are delicious. But I have a problem with some of the labelling. Asda sells above mentioned meat-free meatballs, ASDA Plant Based Vegan Meat-Free Chicken Nuggets, ASDA Plant Based 8 Vegan Beef Style Burgers, and to top it off ASDA Plant Based 4 Duckless Spring Rolls.
The latter ones main ingredient is vegan duck style pieces, I kid you not. Which btw is Water, Wheat Gluten, Rapeseed Oil, Coconut Oil, Soya Protein, Wheat Fibre, Soy Sauce [Water, Salt, Glucose, Barley Malt Extract, Spirit Vinegar, Soya Beans, Fortified Wheat Flour [Wheat Flour, Calcium Carbonate, Iron, Niacin (B3), Thiamin (B1)], Yeast Extract, Salt, Dried Yeast, Flavouring, Thickener (Methyl Cellulose), Preservative (Potassium Sorbate), Garlic Powder, Spices, Sugar, Lactic Acid, Barley Malt Extract, Onion Powder, Pepper Extract.]
Think I rather stick to a lentil dhal and know what's in it and what not.finally tea total but in still in (more) debt (Oct 25 CC £1800, loan £6453, mortgage £59,924/158,000)0 -
I have my concerns about veganism - missing out entire food groups is never a good idea I don't think, unless it's for medical reasons. As omnivores I think we need a certain amount of meat and dairy in our diet. But I totally agree that we eat too much meat here in the West. To be fair, we eat too much of everything.

Personally, though not a vegan myself, I've been interested in vegan foods for decades, since this little gem of a book came out, possibly circa 1987, back when veganism was seen as at best weird and extreme!
Now out of print but if you can find a second hand copy I'd recommend it, as there's a lot of information and practical advice in there.
found it, quite cheapLife is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?0 -
I see it no different to those who for example use sweetener instead of sugar or have decaf instead of normal coffee. They want the taste but not the bad side so by eating an alternative they are not harming an animal/the environment but at the same time enjoy the taste. Surely that’s not a bad thing?need_an_answer said:Again personally if I were vegetarian or vegan I suspect that my diet wouldn't include fake type foods...if you have for example an issue with mayonnaise or bacon why would you want to seek a substitute....1 -
Vegan cheese is really unpleasant. I miss cheese though.
Anyone found any alternatives that don't taste disgusting?Rita, get your head, off my leg..0 -
Other countries & cultures have successfully managed to eat a vegetarian/vegan diet for centuries without needing to invent food in labs or making it to replicate meat etc etc.
Another example of this country creating a huge drama.0
