do I have to pay twice to put my private plate on a diferent car?
Hi, I paid £80 three yeas ago to put my new plate on my car. I know its £80 to put it on a car; i had understood therefore that it didn't cost anything to remove the plate.
It seems i am wrong and that to take it off, i have to pay another £80.
when I put it on another car in the future do I have to pay another £80, or does the £80 I used to take it off, cover the cost of transferring onto anotehr car?
GOV.UK website is not clear and i'm strugglingt o understand it.
Thanks for the help
On top of the £45 my lease company charges to do any admin (£90 for adding + removing!) this plate is costing me more money than i wanted

The £80 is the charge for the certificate of entitlement (or however it’s called)
Once the plate is assigned to a vehicle, that piece of paper becomes “invalid”
So yes you are correct, each change of vehicle costs £80

Before you sell car put private plate on retention - costs £80. Do online, instant change and put original plates back on your current car to return or sell.
When you have new car, allocate plate on retention to new car, no charge. Done online. again instant transfer so must put private plate on new car immediately.
REMEMBER - you must inform your insurance company immediately on both occasions or your car will appear to be uninsured. Quote Me Happy allow free changes if done online, £15 if you phone in to change.0 -
so i can keep the plate for X amount of time without having to pay any more? It might be a few years before i have a new car that i can put it on, as the car i will buy next probably won't be allowed the plate.0

Retention is valid for 10 years then you have to renew. This explains all
