Direct debit not taken - late repayment

I have a direct debit set up to pay off my credit card in full at the end of each month. This usually works with no issues, however in January a DD wasn't taken and the payment is now late. The credit card provider hasn't written to me or charged a fee but it's been less than a week. I'll ring up both banks tomorrow morning but since phone lines are shut now and I'm worried about my credit rating, does anyone know what has likely happened? I recently changed the direct debit to come from a different current account (TSB, if that matters) and it has worked at least once so I know it's active and it is indeed showing in my active DDs.

Also, yes I know I'm probably worrying too much :j

Were there sufficient funds in the account?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • Yes there were
  • Then you'll have nothing to worry about.

when you call them ask to pay with your debit card
  • I myself have a credit card and in the past have had some issues quite a few times with the direct debit service they offer so every month i just pay with my debit card as i think that is more reliable, it may have just been an error with the bank and so your direct debit didn't go through but they should take the payment some time this week usually with in 7 days.

i think my cc collect DD payment in advance of the statement deadline date.
so i can check if its been paid in. if not i take action to avoid penalty.
My dd pays balance of statement in full.

Most DD's are taken "on or after" the date they give you.

I've had DD's taken a day or two after, even when the date they were supposed to take it was a working day.

If they add something on your report then inform them that it is their responsibility to take your money, not yours to send it to them.

I've also occasionally had DDs to credit cards go out a couple of days *after* the due date (when the due date has fallen on a weekend), but the transaction has appeared on my credit card statement dated as though the payment was received on the due date, and nothing else happened.

Update for anyone wondering: I called them this morning and the reason a DD wasn't taken is because after I got my statement, I made a purchase and then later got a refund on the purchase. Apparently the refund covered the amount due. I assumed the refund would have just cancelled out the original purchase, but you learn something new every day...
