Flood damage

Options
Hi all,

We have recently experienced flood damage in our home which has lead to us not being able to live there for at least 6 months.

Our insurance company has found us temp private accomodation for the duration of this time.

We are now in the process of changing address, and contacting the relavant utility companies to explain this. We are currently on a fix term gas/elsc with current supplier and they only do fixed terms so suggested looking elsewhere. How do i manage to do this does anyone know, becuase the property currently has no gas or elec so i need to arrange this?

Also is there anything i should also consider with my current utility providers to do?

Thanks

You will be in a deemed contract with the current suppliers to this property .
You contact them sign up and are then free to move or not .
  • lost me on this sorry.

main thing i need by the looks is a gas and elec supplier as we have none at the mo at the temp property

You do have a supplier, on a deemed contract, it's just that you don't know who the supplier is:

Follow the links / instructions on this OFGEM page: https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/consumers/household-gas-and-electricity-guide/connections-and-moving-home/who-my-gas-or-electricity-supplier
  • Looks like it's a pre pay meter, so this will be fun with kids. Do they do a compaoon this?

Make sure you find out who the supplier is and register with them immediately to get the account in your name otherwise you may end up paying for the previous tenants energy arrears. Get your own pre-pay top up token/card or whatever to make sure that the meter is reset and any previous arrears are deleted.

Once you've got an account with the existing provider you are free to swap to someone else - not doing it correctly can cost you money and grief in the future.

  • We will be in there at least six months they said before we move bk into our home. We will find out this, but we have no option but to use the meter because its a private letting and we can't change to dd

I'm not suggesting that you don't use the meter but you do need to ensure that you are registered with the supplier to avoid getting stuck with a previous tenant's arrears.

  • Thanks.

We are a family of five, so will have to use the pre paid until our home is ready to move back in, which will be a while yet.

I will try and find out who the supplier is, but regards for a cheaper tarriff then we are a little screwed.
