Unless i am missing something then surely the solution is to pay off the debt in full (if it is money you owe, which is seems to be from what you have said) then switch suppliers...

It is a solution I am sure, but not everyone can just come up with £400 easily.
  • I realise that this of no help to you but how is it possible to run up a debt on a prepayment meter? I thought they cut the power when the credit runs out?

The debt is due to the faulty smart meter not communicating properly hence the reason we are repaying the electricity that wasn't charged properly, but yes you are right prepayment meters do disconnect if you run out of credit.

Unfortunately i do not have £400 i can pay out right, otherwise i would have done so.

You can move with that level of prepay debt on your meter, but the new supplier has to be willing to take on that debt. If you are moving from prepay to pay monthly, I would be suprised if any pay monthly supplier would take on that debt.

Boost has to be one of the highest charing prepay suppliers out their, along with another one beginning with U. Getting the debt paid off as quickly as you can, is the only way a) you can move and b) stop paying those silly prices.
  • Try to switch to a cheaper pre-payment tariff with a different supplier then, when the debt is paid off, switch to a credit meter.
