Bulb broke when unscrewing from ceiling, now (nearly) all ceiling lights are out

So, while unscrewing a ceiling bulb from our living room ceiling light fixture I heard a "pop" and now all the ceiling lighting bar a couple of upstairs rooms now doesn't work. The glass bit of the bulb has detached from the metal base. Have tried replacing bulbs in the affected lights with ones I know work and still no joy.

Could someone advise what's probably happened here? And does this indicate a dangerous fault that needs immediate attention?

Previously I remember this happening a couple of times and we had to keep replacing the fuse on our electric board, however the last time the electrician was out he linked the lights up to a trip (i think) so we wouldn't have to do that again. However on the board in the hall all the switches are in the "on" position.

Thanks in advance

Have you extracted the metal part?

Are there any marked as "lights"?
Thy switching them off and then back on. If this doesn't help I'd start with checking the wiring of the culprit light fixture (ceiling rose or terminal block). My feeling is that for this you'll need help.

I would double check the trip switch lever. Some go down when they are off, which is the opposite of what you expect.

If you haven't, please, please turn off the mains at the consumer unit (fuse box) first. The metal parts could be live and you'd get a nasty shock if the power isn't off.

    Worth saying twice.
  • I had this at parents house, if metal part is stuck use a potato to help get grip on the screw fitting. Only do this after power has been isolated to the light fitting you are working on.
