Proof of fault

Hi
I bought a new coat from Trespass just over a week ago.It was an expensive coat waterproof down filled. I wore it for about 3 hours last weekend and I was covered in down on the inside of the coat but also it was leaking through the outside of the coat.
I took the coat back yesterday to the store and they said that unless I was able to provide proof they would not offer me a refund. I thought that this was not necessary within the first 30 days ( I was also out walking in heavy rain so photos were not my first thought). They offered me a credit note or voucher but I dont really want to spend my money in there now.
What are my rights?

Firstly are you sure it's fully waterproof and not just 'showerproof'.....do you have a link to the jacket.

Were you really covered in down, or slight exageration?

The retailer is entitled to check the product is faulty.

    They are correct.
Any faults discovered within the 1st 6 months from purchase are deemed to have been present at the time of sale and if the retailer disputes this, it is up to them to prove otherwise.
However, there is one exception to this and that is if you are attempting to use your 30 day short term right of rejection then the onus then switches back to the consumer to prove that the fault exists and that it's not down to misuse.
