Credit card on disability

I really don't know if I am in the right place. No idea how forums work. I am just looking for advice about credit cards. I have a stable credit score but I've only really been able to add to it by paying my mobile, internet if that even counts and clearpay. I want to better it but I am on benefits. I have been granted my disability benefit for the next ten years as I have a long term illness so I won't lose it. I'm not someone who will go crazy with a credit card. That's not what my benefits are for. However, I am moving and I need new furniture. Obviously I will just have to do it without credit which is fine. However, I see all these places who give finance and it is just sad because I know I'd be a responsible lender. I actually get more in benefits than my partner does working and of course he has gotten lots of cards and now can't get them paid off. I wish there was a place that looked case by case but I know that's just not doable. Is there anything that I could do in order to better my credit? I still feel that it won't matter as I always must choose 'unemployed'. Is that correct? Thanks

Check your eligibility for a sub-prime credit card (for people with little-to-no, or bad, credit history). It leaves a soft search on your credit file (not seen by lenders, so will not affect your chances of getting credit in the future). If you're accepted, you will get a low limit with high interest. Pay your balance off in full each month by Direct Debit to build up a history of responsible lending. Do not go above your credit limit and do not use it to withdraw cash. In time, you should be accepted for mainstream cards from high street banks.

Yes, you are classed as unemployed/on benefits even if you get more income than your partner.
  • I'm on disability benefits and got accepted for a sub-prime credit card, plus bank overdraft so I don't think being on benefits has any bearing on not being offered access to credit.

I would sign up to ClearScore (if you already haven't) If you have a steady credit score they will show you offers you may be entailed too. My score improved and I was offered a Vanquis credit card for £250.

Also if you have online banking you may be able to request a overdraft facility. I'm with Nationwide and I was able to do this online and overtime slowly increase it.

    Goodlook

You do realise that they get a bribe for you taking up these offers, hence why they only offer selected ones. Which you may find you can get better offers elsewhere.:money:

  • Try the amazon card from New day. They're the only card I've found that actually has an option for 'disabled' as apposed to just plain unemployed, and you can collect points to get amazon vouchers. It's not on most eligibility checkers, I only heard of it from reading this forum.
  • Firstly no one has a credit score, we all have credit history.
I have been on disability benefits for 22 years now and have 3 mainstream credit cards and 3 store cards.
OP the fact that you have been awarded a benefit for 10 years doesn't mean they can't/won't review it during that period.
