  • Hi,
Although there are no 'rude' signs in the makaton core vocabulary as such, the sign that you describe is vagina in makaton as well as BSL - in the makaton resource vocabulary. So for example if a makaton using adult with LD needed the sign for vagina they would be told that one taken from BSL. I would avoid using it for anything else if at all possible as if your children are going to be using makaton in later years they may well be intoduced to that sign for vagina. Hope this makes sense.
  • Yeh thanks don't think we'll be using it then!
Anyone got anyideas how to sign a diamond shape without causing offence?

  • have to say i think that when children sing Twinkle Twinkle then they automatically do that shape, I know that we do that sign in the local library.

I think Mr Tumble for the sign he used for toilet, I think he he raised his middle finger up and placed it on his left should and people thought it was rude (or something like that)

    Good Luck!!

    Thank Wokkies :D

The BSL sign for vagina and the sign for diamond as in 'Twinkle, twinkle' are different.

In BSL many signs are the same but the placement of the sign, facial expression, lip pattern, etc are different.

You sign diamond in the space above your head, as the diamond is in the sky. For vagina, you sign it much lower down. ;)

The makaton sign for toilet is considered rude in some cultures and there is an alternative from what I remember although I use the middle finger over to left shoulder as the girls I work with knew and used that when they came to me.I work in mainstream ed with special needs children.
The diamond sign makes us snigger too - I agree it is all about positioning.
