Post Office Bank account

  • I'd be cautious about doing anything with Post Office that requires a Power of Attorney. I've had to raise raised a complaint with them today after trying to open a savings account for my Mum. Another financial institution invalidated my original document by returning two copied pages and keeping the originals so I had to pay another £35 for a validated Office Copy from the Office of the Public Guardian. I sent this with my application and 2 weeks on I find out from an unapologetic customer care rep that they are rejecting it because it's a photocopy. I've reported this to the OPG, but it doesn't fill you with confidence when they don't recognise a legal document. There's nothing else I can send them so I asked the rep to cancel the application.

I would say that is all you have to say about banking with the Post Office.

I am not shy when it comes to trying out all sorts of banks - heck, I have got accounts at Fineco and other EU-based banks, at several challenger banks, at sharia banks, and with currency transfer outfits. There have been a few small issues with some of them but they could all be resolved in reasonable amounts of time, and without spending ages on the phone. Not so the issues that you seem to literally be guaranteed to get with the PO. They have the most terrible customer service you can imagine, and dreadful systems to boot. I closed my accounts with them a while ago and won't go anywhere near them ever again.

When arranging for the PoA, always get several "certified office copies" so that unless it is absolutely necessary, you do not have to send the original to financial institutions etc.
