Vaccinations for holidays - paying v new GP and records

Hello all

Due to go on a cruise to India and the UAE in 8 weeks time. We have moved house, we've just registered with a new GP and they've accepted us but say the nurse might not do our holiday jabs without our GP records. They've requested the records from the old practice but say it could take months.:eek:

Has anyone been in this situation? I don't mind paying to go to a chemist to get them done but surely the same issue will apply? Anyone know why it takes months? Do they transfer them by pigeon

You may need to make contact with your old GP yourself and ask for a list of what vaccinations you have had.

Good idea silvercar. Wish we hadn't moved GP til after the holiday now. Don't think either of us have had any for years

Just a bit of advice on vaccinations and GPs:
I meticulously keep a record of what vaccinations we've had, what date and how long they cover us for.

Good job I do.
A while ago, I filled in a holiday form expecting not to need any.
I was told that I needed X vaccination. Despite telling the receptionist that I'd had one the same date as my OH and was therefore still covered, they insisted I had the vaccination.
Made an appointment.
Saw the practice nurse.
Gave her the date I had in my records.
She checked, agreed with me that I was still covered and apologised that they were wrong.

Once you get your details from old GP, which really shouldn't be too hard, when you next get any new vaccinations, just ask for a print out of what you currently have.
My local GP seems to have no issues with giving me that info.

Aren't there some that you need to pay for anyway?
I know I've had to in the past although off the top of my head I can't remember what they were.

Cholera (£28 - just had last week)
Rabies
Japanese Encephalitis
Tick Borne Encephalitis
Yellow Fever
Zika - Not sure

Yes - but without the GP record not sure I can even get them done privately.

Are these all recommended for the area of India the OP is visiting and UAE?

I had cholera vaccine last year- free

Yellow Fever- be aware you only need one in your lifetime now, any certificate, however old, is valid

I don't remember all those being recommended- I think they said that I might consider.

.....It clearly lists the free ones, and the ones which must be paid for.

Some countries need mandatory vaccines, some are simply recommended depending on YOUR individual circumstances and lifestyle.

MASTA are an excellent travel clinic. If you're lucky they might visit your GP surgery every few weeks. An appointment should be free, BUT only the UK standard vaccines listed on the NHS website will be free.
