    Thanks as always, ice queen. I was going to amend my post because I realised it was technically wrong but got interrupted and had to go out!
    In this case the debt appears to have already been passed to DWP. The practical point is that DWP can recover the money so it's simpler just to pay it if the money is available.
    I assume it's because DWP have greater powers that the HMRC debt is being transferred across.
    Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

    yes that's right, HMRC can't do attachment orders
