If you want something kind of picnicky, I second doing pulled pork or gammon in the slow cooker and serving with bread, pickles etc. I often find Morrisons to be the cheapest for boneless shoulder that I use for pulled pork. If you want something more like a sit down dinner, take the same pork shoulder you'd use for pulled pork, some cider (a bottle/can of any) and some stock. Add some mixed herbs, onions and carrots and bung in the slow cooker. When it's cooked, stir in some cream or creme fraiche for a yummy sauce/gravy. The meat will be be falling apart after hours in the slow cooker so just pull it into chunks. Its just a version of a stew really but feels a bit fancier! (By the way, I don't actually like cider to drink but I like this, it doesn't taste strongly of it). Make a load of mash in advance and stick it in the oven to keep warm. Some nice crusty bread would be good too.

I like doing a big chilli with a variety of options for with it - rice, nachos, jacket potatoes, salsa, guacamole, grated cheese etc. If your OH doesn't like chilli but everybody else does, open him a tin of beans and he can have beans and cheese on a jacket potato :)

Some nice ideas on here thank you. I also have family visit on a regular basis. How are they with curry? One of the family is vegetarian but we're so used to it we cater for her without a second thought. I make the curry in the slow cooker with mushrooms, onions and any other veg available (we like raisins in it too) I take a good portion out for her then add the cooked chicken and heat it through thoroughly. I like it made in advance to soak up the flavours. All it needs then is to heat both through and add fresh cooked rice when needed. You can always add side dishes like poppadoms etc if you like.
I've found that cheesecake, apple pie etc goes down well. Just add cream or ice cream to make it really easy. :)

Please and Thank You are the magic words;)
  • Have a look at the pinch of nom's campfire stew or Cuban beef recipes both of which can be done in the slow cooker.
