Toyota vs Volkswagen
I am looking to buy a second hand car and interested in an estate.
I am looking at Toyota Auris touring / Avensis
or VW Passat.
Any suggestions from Toyota owners please?
I previously owned a Passat and pleased with them but the price difference on similar year and mileage Toyota seems about £2k cheaper.

I have an Auris Tourer Icon (Hybrid) and it's been excellent. Purchased 2nd hand to replace a Focus Ecoboost and I haven't regretted it.
You'll get a flavour of what the owners think about them and get some more specific responses from https://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/forum/110-auris-club/
If you do look at the Hybrid I would make sure it has had the annual hybrid battery check from Toyota0 -
I recently bought a 10 year old second hand Toyota Corolla. I was surprised by the big difference in price between that and the VW Passat. Both good reliable cars. I am not worried in resale value though as I will probably drive it until it needs scrapped. Though, since the OP is going for a more recent car, resale value will be a factor.0

We hired a brand spankin' Auris hybrid estate a few years ago. Frankly, I hated it and was delighted to give it back a week and 1,500km later. It had very little in the way of redeeming features, and as a driving experience it aspired to mediocrity on wheels and failed. The boot was appalling, due to the height of the floor. The mirrors gave so little view that the reversing camera was necessary - but was unusable on anything but bone dry roads, since it just covered over with spray instantly. The hybrid battery didn't give sufficient power or range for anything more than novelty value "Look, electrickery" trundles, and it wasn't particularly economical. Even in the time we had it, it had several electrical glitches - most worryingly the complete dash shutting down while under way. It came back after stopping and restarting.
I'm glad you like yours. But if I was handed the keys to one by another rental company, I'd ask if they had anything else.0 -

We've had various Skodas over the years while my in-laws have favoured VWs. To be honest there really is little in it, except the Skoda is cheaper and comes with a lot more kit as standard (and is cheaper to maintain and service if you stick with main dealers)."We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0 -

Not buying used - a three year old Superb cost a couple grand more than a Passat. Octavia more than a Golf.
I test drove a three year old Passat Estate last week, which I’ve put a deposit on.
Very comfortable car and loads of space inside without feeling too big to drive. Comes with a spare wheel as standard, which is great these days.
Downside with Skoda Octavia is noise, they’re not well soundproofed. It’s a common complaint on owner forums. My Dad had an octavia which was a good car but really let down by how noisy it was on the motorway.Mortgage remaining: £42,260 of £77,000 (2.59% til 03/18 - 2.09% til 03/23)
