Fiat 500 - Brake pads/disc replaced, brake pedal puff/hiss?

Hi,

Nightmare MOT passed 2 weeks ago. Brakes grinded on girlfriends car this week and now pads and disc need replacing. Paid £185 to replace which seemed a lot. Quikfit didnt pick up on mot that the pads were completely worn.

Problem: driving off after replacement pads and discs the brakes are making a puffing noise when pushed in and also when it it released.

Never had this problem before.

I'm taking it back to the garage tommorow morning.

1. What is the issue, did they not connect the brakes properly?

2. Is it dangerous to drive like this?

3. Can i expect them to fix it for the price I paid. It never made the noise before and as soon as worked on it has started.

Please advise

James

What made you think £185 was a lot of money for pads and discs?

Just a guess - did you have a sticking caliper(s) before, causing the wear? Now with new pads, they're still grinding, because the calipers still haven't been cleaned/replaced, and are still causing binding? I'd expect a mechanic to pick that up...

Wheres this noise coming from and are you sure it's not just new pads and discs bedding in
  • Hi James

Ok so first of all on the MOT they can only advise if the brakes are showing signs of wear. They don’t fail if they need replacing (unless dangerous)
Also if it passes the brake test on the rolling road they won’t mention the brakes.

You have paid a lot for pads and discs but don’t forget that the labour cost is the most.

As for your noise I believe that the puffing hissing noise if in the car is the brake pedal but is normal as the brakes won’t need as much pressure for them to work. Quite simply because the pads are thicker and so are the discs (new) they don’t have to travel as far for them to contact.

I think the noise you’re hearing is normal and is the pedal itself

    Hope this helps !

Pads can be failed if below the legal minimum.
Issue being you cant always see the pads through the wheel in which case they cannot fail them.

Your understanding of brake calipers and hydraulics is incorrect. Whether the pad has 2mm or 6mm the width between pad and disc will be the same as the piston will adjust as the pad wears.
Hydraulic pressure remains unchanged at whatever thickness of the pad.
Subject to a caliper being in working order of course

Sounds like you may have a leaky servo.
