Private/Personalised Number Plate

Options
We have just purchased a new (used) car and have decided to get a private/personalised number plate for it (a £250 one, not talking thousands!!) as the original number plate was a bit rubbish and we were thinking of getting a personalised one anyway.

We pick the car up on Friday but I don’t know what order things are meant to go? We have purchased the plate so should get the paperwork giving us “entitlement” to that particular plate soon, I assume we can then go get the plates made?

With regard to changing the plates over, i guess that cannot happen until Friday when we pick up the car and hopefully the dealership has the paperwork showing us as the owner there and then. Once the car is ours, I guess we can make the switch via the DVLA?

With car insurance and breakdown cover, which we will need to have valid for the Friday - will this have to be done in the old number plate and then we change it over?

Is there a better way of sorting it?

  • Either have it done via the supplying dealer - they will sort it out easily - don't forget to tell your insurers though of change of plate. If you have about a week left before collection they should be able to sort it.

Or just wait till your V5C arrives and do it online - it's pretty simple that way.

Yes old number plate. But remember and inform them when you switch the plates.

You could have gotten the dealer to do it for you but unlikely they will now if the pick up is friday and you don't have your certificate of entitlement yet.

Just remember to get the plates made up before you apply online to transfer it to the vehicle. Also be aware when you use the online service, a new v5 is automatically generated upon submission. Meaning if you want to retain the plate but sell the vehicle, you need to apply to remove plate & wait for new v5 to arrive before you can transfer it into the buyers name. If you make the mistake of doing the owner transfer first, the plate transfers with it and you'd need the new owner to apply to remove the plate & give you the certificate of entitlement.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride
  • Unless it’s a new unregistered car, then I believe you will need the new V5 with the transfer of keeper to you before you can transfer the plate onto the vehicle at which stage a new V5 will be sent to you.

We bought a 2nd hand motor last year and that’s what we had to do.

With a brand new unregistered vehicle I believe the dealer can register the vehicle with the plate for you. (They will need the plate document - I forget it’s name)
  • I have had it done on a used car purchase before, but the dealer will usually need at least a week to get it all sorted. Probably easier just to wait for the new V5C and then do it.
