8n this day and age where travel by car or public transport is not difficult you are really rarely far from family. That just isn't an excuse.
We can be in London from the East Midlands in a shade under 2 hours. Not much happens in under 2 hours!0 -

People couldn’t afford train fares on a regular basis as FTBs.

I think it very much depends where you live in the country and you can't easily move your family. I live in a Bucks village which is in good commuting distance of London - a one bed Victorian terrace with no parking will set you back £220K - on top of the £500+ a month season ticket into London + £7.50 a day parking. (Local jobs would not support this mortgage) In my experience you can move away from family which is fine in the early years but as your parents age they need support and being a long distance away takes it toll. I lived around 120 miles away from my parents and my Dads final illnesss tooks it toll as involved unknown hours parked on the M25 for various hold ups. Bottom line nobody knows whats heading in their direction.0

Elderly care usually comes in middle age but youngish divorcees may want to be close to where their children live which may not be under their control if they aren’t the main carer.0

I never understand that 'but you choose to live there...'.(South East, not london) I was born here, all my family are here, my friends are here, my husband's business is here, my job is here, my kids friends are here. It's not that easy to just go.0

Why can't the youth accept that they can't afford to live in the area where they were born in. Why can't they move up north and in 20 years time still not afford to move back. It's not gentrification, it's the willingness to work hard for it. I had to pay 15% interest rates on my ivory tower don't you know0
