Can you stall them saying that OH signed not you? Not really sure about this. Call your OH and get him home so you don't have to deal with it on your own. I would wonder whether the order is valid as your OH didn't know what he was signing until after he signed it.

I take it that you don't have £400 space on a credit card to pay it?

The other thing you can do is say you won't pay unless you have a written statement of the debt, ie what charges they have put on it. Or else phone the company they are collecting on behalf of and try to pay them direct?

sorry really off the top of my head stuff. I hope rog2 comes along to help

Hi tf - I had bailiffs call for Non Domestic Rates, but was able to talk to my local council - it turned out that I was eligible for a 50% reduction, which they applied immediately, then accepted payment over three instalments.
I know, from other posts, that not all councils are receptive to requests - some seem to positively relish in 'unleashing the dogs' - but it could be worth giving the collections department a call.

    Business rates?

Are you entitled to Rural Rates Relief or Small Business Rates Relief? Most properties under a certain amount get the automatic 5% reduction, but those entitled to more need to write in to the assessor to claim their full reduction.

Edit: Aren't you supposed to be given 7 days notice that they're coming?
And aren't they only allowed to discuss a debt with the debtor? They are forbidden from discussing a debt with friends/relatives

    Hi Guys and thanks.

My darling MIL has come to the rescue. She is going to pay them off and we are going to pay her back. He was even obnoxious and bullying to her.

I rang the council and they said they would talk to the bailiff about reinstating payments and not send it to court. Bailiff rang back and said would reinstate order but we needed to pay their fees of £145 and we couldn't set up DD we would have to send PO each month and was realy going on about it. MIL came to the rescue and we will now pay parents.

    Thank you all so much.

Glad you got this sorted. Hadn't noticed quite how late my advice was.
Hope you're not too stressed over it.

I was absolutley petrified. Ths BDL gave me advice but no matter what I said or they said they were going to come in anyway. He phoned for locksmiths etc. The police came but wouldn't do anything. It was a nightmare. He really scared me. I haven't calmed down yet.
