HSBC rewards credit card "not authorised" at Asda pay-at-pump petrol (2 branches), works elsewhere

Hi, asking on behalf of my partner. He has a HSBC 'Rewards' credit card (with Advance account) which works normally everywhere (shops, Amazon, etc) other than at the Asda "pay at the pump" petrol where the payment terminal won't authorise the card.

This has happened 3 times now across 2 different branches of Asda (over a time period of a few weeks). He attempted it a couple of times and then used a different card.

He called HSBC today and they said they can't see anything wrong on the account, nothing blocked etc.

The account is in good standing with statements paid on time and within its credit limit. (The £100 pre-auth would fit easily within the credit limit but he said it may have tried to authorise £1 instead? but I'm not 100% about that.) Credit limit £3000 of which only a fraction of that is used.

Does anyone know please, why this may be happening and if there is anything he can do?

It's nothing to do with him personally, I had the same problem with my Tandem credit card. You just have to pay at the kiosk.

Could be the chip is not connecting correctly in pump.

Are all the cards kept together? Not unknown for chip to chip contact to cause damage that may only show in certain devices.

No, Asda admit there is a problem with some types of cards and say that the kiosk must be used. The transaction is declined rather than the card not being read.

A lot of cards restrict pay at pump due to the increased fraud risks.
Why not just pay in the kiosk?

My local Asda petrol station doesn't have a kiosk. All the pumps are pay-at-pump only.
  • I had issues with Asda pay at pump years ago using a debit card. The transactions were accepted but were not taken from my account for several months when they claimed a lump sum of around £250. I didn’t keep a close eye on my account as I should have done. I try to avoid using Asda pay at pump because of this, just have no faith in it.

Ours is the same, no kiosk. Never had a problem though, with a variety of credit cards.
