RSA Household Insurance Claim Denied - Any Advice?

My household insurance claim was officially denied today after now 2 years of dealing with the insurance company.

I was staying in my son's property which was rented, it was burgled and all my jewellery and belongings were stolen. I spoke to the insurance company and they said I was covered as I had 'possessions out of home insurance coverage'. I proceeded to make a claim with RSA insurance and they referred to third party investigators Cotswold Group.

After two years of jumping through hoops and dealing with their 3 sets of investigators, who strangely lost files, detailed statements, police reports and correspondence and even tried to deny the claim by misinterpreting facts and suggested I should claim under my son’s insurance, which we didn’t have as it was a rented property.

Finally today, they are now denying I didn’t own the jewellery or my belongings, even though I forwarded a receipts and photographs of key items.

I am considering appealing this to the Financial Ombudsman. Would that be a futile task as I read they usually side with the insurer or should I be contacting solicitors?

  • To appeal to the FOS you have to go through the complaints process with the insurer first. This is free for you and the details on how to complain will be found in the policy documents they have sent you.

Far from 'usually siding with insurers' the FOS are independent and if anything, are incredibly lenient to the consumer where there is a shadow of 'giving the customer the benefit of the doubt'.

The vitriol you read about the FOS is usually from unhappy complainers who's complaint wasn't upheld, usually because they were unjustified.

Regarding your story, there is a wealth of information missing from your post, if we are to offer help.
  • Thank you. I will contact RSA's complaint department. It seems the denial letter was from Cotswolds Investigations who are representing RSA. Not sure if that make a difference?

RSA has a dreadful reputation and are ranked Poor on TrustPilot. It may be worthwhile going to local press, CAB, local news channel or some other forum that can help you with advice or cause publicity that shames RCA. Good Luck----you've had a rough deal from a notorious company.
