Veterans Railcard

It has been announced by the Secretary of State for Transport (Grant Shapps) that from November 2020, UK Armed Forces Veterans will be able to buy a 'Veterans Railcard' giving a third off most train fares.

The new railcard for veterans will be available to buy from 11 November and will cost £21 for a limited period, before rising to £30.

So when you leave and hand in your HM Forces Railcard, you can get one of these.

  • Great news! We heard on "Wake up to money" that families may be included? Any more info anyone? Guess it may be a bit early!
  • This railcard will also allow their family to travel with them, potentially saving military families hundreds of pounds a year. I am sure that you will agree with me that this is a welcome measure, alongside a much wider set of commitments which are being announced by the Minister for the Cabinet Office today in the government’s consultation response to last year’s consultation on the Strategy for our Veterans.

Great idea but 22 years too late for me when I used to regularly travel from Edinburgh to London to collect my son. I haven't been near a train since.
