Can my boss swear at me?

    Out of interest, would there be any additional route to take if the swearing included discriminatory or racially abusive language?

    Would it need reporting to the police in that instance?

    The best time to do that is when you left the place, got a new job, and see them in public - not work place ;)

    yes. Is he swearing, or is he swearing AT you?
    If it's the first, you might want to overlook it as he might have who knows what stressing him?

    Is he an equal opportunity employer? If he only swears at you can claim victimisation but he seems to swear at everyone

    Well, My boss is the company director of an independent business

    He likes to run his mouth and as soon as someone does something that he doesn't like, he jumps on me/them with swear words.

    If the swearing was directed AT you, and was either discriminatory or racially abusive, your first step would be a calm "I find your language offensive, please desist".

    If the swearer persisted, AND YOU HAD A WITNESS who was PREPARED TO GIVE A STATEMENT, then you could go to the police if there was no higher authority within the company (as in the OP's case).

    If I witnessed such language in the workplace, I'd say my first step should be either a calm "I find your language offensive, please desist" or to find a manager to report it to. However, especially if it was the MD behaving in this way, I'd think very carefully about whether I wanted to continue working there before agreeing to be a witness for a colleague.

    Some work environments, bad language is not unexpected. Is this one of them? My work environment, it is unexpected for the staff to swear, not unexpected for the clients we worth with to swear, but if they go off on one on the phone I'm entitled to say "please don't swear" and "if you continue to swear, I am going to hang up and I will ask X to call you back". I sometimes swear, but never AT a colleague, only ABOUT a situation.

    To the OP, if you're not already in a union, it MIGHT be worth joining. If you haven't been there for two years, you know they can get rid of you for any non-discriminator reason, and that would include "you don't like me swearing, you don't have to put up with it."

    Not at all. If the swearing is racial abuse, that's illegal,ditto if he is being victimised and another matter. If not, you can ask him to desist but it's not actionable under the law. If he is equal ops employer (as I said) then it infringed company policy, but not the law.
