Help Preheat yes or no?
Hi all
Wondering if you can help me me and my boyfriend have just moved in together, and are getting use to the gas costs although it seems we pay a lot. We are on a meter and its a pain having to top up every few days and finding gas is expensive:(! Now I've noticed on our boiler our Preheat buttons been on since we've moved in. Ive lowered boiler temp and water temp in hoping it will help. Do you think it adds £ or ok to leave on?
Many thanks x

Before I got my smart meter, I used to use the preheat on my combi. I did find that I got immediate hot water, but after a while it went cold, until the boiler started doing its job. That could be due to the age of the boiler mind you.
When I got my smart meter, I noticed that I was using around 4 - 5 kW a day on the pre heat, around 12 - 15p a day. As this worked out to be around £40 a year, I stopped using the pre heat.
Then I came across this gadget, had it aound 18 months now, and get hot water within 25 seconds. I use less than 1kWh to fill the bathroom basin. The gadget has now paid for itself. I call it the gadget as I cannot remember the correct name for it.
It is connected to the second pipe from the left0 -
Thankyou so much for your reply i am going to show that to my boyfriend. We rent so i dont know if we could adjust boilern like that and its pretty new. Thats brilliant though saving 40 quid just shows!
Thanks xx:)0 -
Use of the pre-heat depends on how often you use the HW taps. If you are frequently using them, then it may be a slight saving by having on the pre-heat. Don't forget without the pre-heat - depending on your plumbing layout - you can be running off and wasting water in the pipes before the hot stuff arrives.
Several people on MSE have complained that in the middle of the night the boiler fires up to keep the pre-heat tank heated, and wakes them.0 -
