British owned banks for current account?

Your criteria mean that you are restricted to building societies, rather than banks. Nationwide is the obvious choice, but there are a number of building societies around the country.
Incidentally, Tesco Bank is essentially a trading name for RBS, just as M & S bank is a name for HSBC.0 -
Depending on how "British money" is defined, I doubt there is any guarantee that all members' money is indeed British. Obviously it will all be Sterling deposits but you don't need to be a British citizen to make deposits with Nationwide, or any other Building Society. I reckon the OP chases some sort of British unicorn if they think they can find their ideal provider.Voyager2002 wrote: »Your criteria mean that you are restricted to building societies, rather than banks. Tesco Bank has been wholly owned by Tesco since 2008. RBS no longer holds a stake in Tesco Bank.Voyager2002 wrote: »Incidentally, Tesco Bank is essentially a trading name for RBS, just as M & S bank is a name for HSBC.0 -
In terms of HSBC while they are a worldwide bank. Each country runs as a separate entity.
So the big ML case was in no way related to HSBC UK.
I think the OP will find that foreign money is invested in all UK banks via one form or another.
Even Nationwideare not as clean as some think.

Tesco bought out the RBS shareholding in 2008 and Tesco Bank is now wholly owned by TescoVoyager2002 wrote: »Your criteria mean that you are restricted to building societies, rather than banks. Nationwide is the obvious choice, but there are a number of building societies around the country.

not to be tangled by any controversy or bailouts. I just want normal honest bank, if such thing exists. In that case I hope Tesco bank will not fold that quickly, as If no other choice is found, then this can become on main account.
Does this count as controversy?
