Someone just tried to open my door

I live in a block of flats. I haven't had many issues besides weed fumes which have now stopped.

I am mentally unwell and am in recovery from extreme stress, partly due to people trying to get into my previous flat.

Someone just tried to open my door handle.

I was undressed and I shouted down the corridor excuse me. I didn't see them, but now I wish I had. They said "Sorry wrong flat, I was looking for someone".

They didn't walk back past my corridor so they obviously went into another flat. There is a camera in the corridor and the landlord is checking tomorrow.

Why would someone do this. I'm having a hard time convincing myself that the person made a mistake. Who doesn't knock. If they were a friend they would have known its the wrong flat and if you are unsure you knock.

This is triggering a real episode for me as I value the safety of my home and I am trying to get well.

I didn't call the police and I wish I had gone out but I wansnt dressed.

Can anyone think of a scenario where this is a mistake. I cant.

  • I have had someone walk into my flat, take shoes off and sit on couch next to me. Turns out they had wrong flat and were visiting their friend in the flat above mine

    As above.

How can someone just walk into your flat?

Why is your door not locked?

No one can just walk into my house.

Yes, they made a mistake it could be that simple.

Or they may have been up to no good but I doubt you'll ever really find out. It's good there's cctv but of little use to you given the scenario.

When living in a large HMO someone let themselves in pretending they were after a light for a cigarette. It was obviously just a ruse and they were trying doors to see if anyone had left a room unoccupied.

It's like in the olden days, car thieves trying door handles of parked cars to see if any had been left unlocked.

Don't obsess about it too much, it was probably just a druggie looking for the means to his next fix. Just keep your doors locked from now on.
  • Thanks everyone.

To clarify the door was locked they tried the handle, not the lock or anything.

Unfortunately it's hard not to obsess, I have obsessive issues, especially when it comes to contamination. If it were some druggie trying to get in, that makes it worse for me. Part of being well is knowing your home is safe and that there is nobody around trying to get in etc. In fact its a basic principal in the hierarchy of needs by Maslow and what I got away from along time ago.

The person did go into someones flat since they didn't come back towards my side of the corridor or walk past it. The CCTV will help because they will be able to see if it was a tenant and if so evict them.

You don't just walk into someones home if you are unsure where you re going. It's likely they had bad intentions in my mind
  • This is my issue though, surely they would have known. I don't know anyone that would think its ok to just walk in if you are unsure of the flat number. If they had knocked then tried I would have understood more.

There's no chance of that happening.
  • You mean a tenant deliberately trying to break into someone else property. How isn't that right for eviction. Unless they explain themselves they are breaking the law, who knows maybe they have other offences or warning from the landlord.
