Starling and Google pay

Recently opened a Starling account and couldn't connect the card to Google pay. When I contacted Starling they told me the following:

"Thank you for getting in touch regarding your mobile wallet provisioning.

Recently we have updated our security rules to correlate with industry wide standards. This amendment will impact the ability for some mobile wallets to connect with Starling cards.

As we could not connect your device automatically, these new rules may be applicable to you. Unfortunately we are unable to amend this.

We are really sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. There are of course, alternative methods of payment that you may like to use instead."

Does anyone know if those are actual rules or if they're just making stuff up?

    Starling again.
Why should they be making things up?
As they say, you don't really need to use google pay do you? You can always use the physical card.

I'm fully aware but it does sound incredibly weird given I've not had this issue with any other card that supports Google pay

I only use GPay in Chrome, on my Windows Laptop as I am on iOS mobiles.

Starling works ok on GPay in Chrome, so it must have something to do with the mobile technology.

I don't use Starling on mobiles as I only use credit cards for mobile payments. I have, however, been able to load the Starling card into the ApplePay wallets on my phone and watch, so would expect it to work for payments.

Have you tried linking your Starling card to a Curve card, and then use the Curve to pay? I know someone who uses that on their Garmin which wouldn't do the Starling card natively.

Curve works funnily enough. Was just curious if anyone else had experienced that because it did seem like a weird excuse.

Just set up Google Pay with Starling on my old Pixel 2 XL and it works fine for me...
  • I've used Startling with Google pay. You can add the card from the app and directly in Google pay. I remember one of these methods didn't work so I used the other one (helpful advice I know...)
