Change of Bill Payer

Options
Hi All,

Due to suffering a stroke my Mother whom I lived with has had to move into a Nursing Home.

We've just now received the Deputyship and are looking to get the gas and electricity bill put into my name (or rather a new account at the same address) but Scottish Power have been a bit unhelpful so we're now looking to switch providers - would anyone have any experience of this kind of situation please?

Ideally I'll be able to go for the new provider as though I'd moved into the account, begin the process and close out my Mam's account seamlessly...!

I've used the Energy Club tool earlier today to shortlist two.

Thanks All

Ross

I confess, I don't understand what the terms of your 'Deputyship' agreement is. I thought a Deputyship agreement was to look after the affairs of another, not to take over their affairs by putting their affairs into your name.

However, if you are allowed to put their affairs into your hands, and you are also seeking to switch supplier, then it's quite easy :)
    - simply make a switch and apply in your name. There is no check on who the existing account holder is. The only safeguard is that normally the existing account holder will be advised that an attempt to switch supplier has been made.

You will then be solely responsible for paying the bills.

No doubt you have had legal advice, but when I was acting as Attorney for my father, even after he was in a care home, I kept all accounts in his name, and he continued to pay the bills.

But if you have opted to take over paying the bills with your money, not you mother’s, then the above advice is OK.
  • Thank you both for your advice, very much appreciated, my brother has the Deputyship rather than myself and it's a case of paying my way in the house. My mother's fees are set to take all of her income bar £25 allowance per week, so it would not be possible for her to cover them anyway.

How can paying any bills you didn't have to pay before ever save you money?
