Since then, I have received a new, replacement HSBC gizmo (as they are not designed to allow you to simply replace a dead battery). Ever since I have had this new gizmo, I am only allowed access to my online account using that security gizmo.
Does anyone know if there is anyway to reinstate the alternative of limited access I used to have that required only the second password?

Nope. They have removed that for everyone, and a lot of banks have removed the option for 2FA-less log on entirely.

    Thank you for that clarification.
I thought the withdrawal was linked somehow to the issue of my new security gizmo as it seemed to occur at the same time. Seems it was just a coincidence though from what you say. :)

Indeed, pure coincidence - also a pain in the 'arris. Nationwide texts you a code, whereas Lloyds doesn't ask for anything to log me on curiously!

No chance but you do have the alternative to generate the security code through the app. Or indeed use the app to actually log into your account on your smartphone or tablet, by simply using TouchID or FaceID

This is a new one on me:

Coop Bank has sent me a text message to check I made a transaction and wants me to send them a text back to confirm.

That will be a security check. :T

  • Thanks for this, exactly what I was looking for. Having read about the apparent massive rise in Sim Swap scams in the US due to the lackadaisical approach of their mobile providers I thought it was time to check out what was going on here. I was initially hopeful when I heard about SCA until of course I realised that the FCA seem to think that insecure OTP via SMS is OK.

    Jim!

It's a "I couldn't be bothered to do 2FA at the time, so I'll check later at the customer's expense" check. They could have asked for 2FA when I made the transaction if they wanted to confirm I had access to the mobile device they have registered for me. An SMS exchange does nothing beyond that.

Not all banks are fully set up for 2FA.

    Why is at customer expense?

I had to send a SMS to say "Yes" I made and authorise the transaction. It cost me 5p.
