British Gas Smart Meter

I have been on a prepayment meter with British Gas for a number of years. Both Gas & Electric.
I no longer owe them anything. And haven't done for about 6 years.
I recently asked them to move me back onto a credit meter and they refused due to my credit rating.
They are coming today to install new "Smart Meters".
Will this stop me moving to another supplier in the future?
Will the new meters be replace, or be compatible, with a new supplier if I move?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Don't let them fit the smart meters! Send them away. Keep your options open for the time being. Move to a supplier that doesn't hit you with a credit check - e.g. EDF0
