    A lot of plastics get brittle over time if exposed to UV or heat/cold cycles repeatedly, and by the sounds of it the screen is in a HGV bay or similar where that's what will happen.

    You can also get plastic and glass going suddenly due to previous damage that has been getting worse until it reaches a critical point and something gives one of the reasons it's not a great idea to use a glass that's chipped as it can suddenly go after seemingly being fine with the chip for months (I've had it happen where I've gone to pick up a glass that's been used for weeks with a chip, and it's shattered as my hand touched it).
