Go to Tromso in late Feb.
Book ahead with Norwegian as they fly direct and can be cheap.
Choose Airbnb as accommodation.
Pick up a car and drive around at night.
Look at DIY booking dog sledding etc.
Get food from supermarkets and cook in the Airbnb
Take alcohol if that's your thing.
5-7 days gives you a chance of seeing the lights (Heavily weather dependent).0 -

This year is one of the worst years to see the northern lights as the solar cycle is at it's lowest, it starts getting stronger again over the next 5 years. If it's something you really want to see you'll have a better chance in a few years.
Saying that my friend went to Iceland over Christmas and out of the 10 days she was there she saw them once quite faintly.
All of those countries are expensive, the flights are the cheapest aspect of the holiday. Food and alcohol is the most expensive aspect. So you could save on that if you take snacks from home with you and if you want alcohol - get it at duty free before you go, or even put a bottle in your hold bag!
Hotels are about the same as most other places.
If you're not too fussed about the Northern Lights, Oslo might be a good option, it's got Viking museums where you can see long boats, which might interest your son (some kids may find it dull though) and other viking related places. You could also travel part way through your holiday another location, like go to Lapland.0
