    You could head for Ventimiglia, which is slap bang on the border with France. Actually, you could park in France and walk over!

    If you are driving through France, then your OH may not be aware that, unless you pay motorway tolls, you'll have to stick to the equivalent of A roads, as motorways in France are heavily tolled and it's not cheap. Calais to Nice is €109, each way. The motorways are amazing, and that price, should probably be paved in platinum.

    Hull to Rotterdam as far as I recall is an overnight ferry in either direction taking ca 12-15 hours, not for the faint of stomach. You'd need to factor this in to your plans as well
