Can battery be recovered?

Why is it off the road for so long? Have you possibly got something left on draining the battery when its not on charge? Even the built in clock uses some power albeit slight.0

No the battery's disconnected. As suggested above it looks like I've just not been looking after it well enough by not keeping it properly charged. I'll keep trying for now but it sounds as if I'll be lucky to get it working again, though it would be worth it for the odd ocassion when I've got to get the car out of the garage temporarily.0 -
Hey, don't beat yourself up too hard - a decade out of a car battery is pretty damn good going!0

Believe it or not, the engine is starting again!! I left the charger on for about 24 hours (as someone suggested) and it's fixed the problem.
I'd be grateful for advice about how often I should be using my charger to keep the battery fully charged (once per week, once per month, etc?).0 -
As discussed just buy a CTEK and leave it in trickle charge.0

Problem fixed? Or symptom fixed?
If the battery is disconnected, you shouldn't need to keep charging it at all.0 -
As has been said, 10 years of life for a battery is exceptional, especially when it has not been used in the charging circuit, i.e. with the engine running and being driven. Just disconnecting it and charging it for long periods does not do it any good at all. As a simple example of how it all works, here goes:
When the engine is started, a good battery will immediately start the car. The alternator is driven by a belt from a pulley on the front of the engine and supplies the correct voltage and amperage to the circuit. As electrical items are switched on and off, such as lights, radio etc, this varies and the charging circuit deals with it by adjusting the current to suit. This is how battery life is best maintained. Even the best of trickle chargers cannot match this.
I would think that your battery will give you problems again and I advise you to buy another one. Try to use the car more than you do at the moment: that is what maintains not only the battery, but all parts of the circuit, from battery through starter motor to alternator.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

Don't currently use the car but may want to start using it again at some point in the future. But I do need to get it out of the garage from time to time so that I can do things in the garage.0
