Hi all,
49 year old, first car/insurance. Want to take advantage of cheapest fully comp deal and understand that 24 days in advance is the best time to buy.
Trouble is my test is booked for the 12th Feb. Want to jump the gun and buy my insurance tomorrow to get the best price BUT to do this I would need to say I have a full licence, which obviously is not true. Naturally I won’t do that.
Do I get insurance based upon a provisional licence, but then run the risk of the increase upon passing my test jumping way over budget?
Any advice to help me get the best deal?
Many thanks in advance.
Liz.

I would wait. Any price you get now might change radically when/if you qualify. You could do some dummy quotes with fictional information to get an idea which insurer offers the best deal, then buy when you're qualified. I0

A lot of quotes are valid for X number of days anyway, so you might find that you're OK to get the quote now then buy when you've passed. Beware any admin fees for a mid-term policy change, if you take the policy as a provisional license holder.
We had my husband (31) as a named provisional driver on my insurance, then changed his license to full when he passed. It cost ~£35 for 11 months with the full license, no admin fee on that.
We considered keeping my old car for him, and if the policy was in his name with me as a named driver then it worked out about £100 a year more for his insurance than mine and I've been driving 12 years/have 9 years NCD. He has had his full license 1 month and 0 years NCD.0 -
Don't count your chickens..
Wait till you have passed your test.
Have you bought your car already? As really it should be insured just in case....Life in the slow lane0 -
You haven't passed your test yet. Struth.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

I had exactly the same situation as you do recently where my daughter (17) had her test booked for Jan 6th.
We did some rough quotes just before christmas accepting that the numbers would likely change when we came to actually insure her if she passed.
We also considered insuring her from a couple of weeks after she passed her test but then we would have been in the realms of SORNing her car as her learner insurance became void once she passed.
By the time we factored in the three weels of tax that would be lost + having too pay for Jan again if we choose not to wait until Feb it just wasn't worth the mucking around (and i would have had another month of a 50 mile round trip taking her to school in the opposite direction to work which is 6 miles away.
So there might be savings but consider if they are enough to be worth it.0 -
Insurance tends to jump up a Bit when you pass. Pass then sort the insurance.0
