Kitchen on a budget..

  • I recently had my kitchen completely redone - 11'7" x 9' so not too far off your size. I was also working to a budget very similar to yours and managed to hit it. It wasn't solid wood or anything but still decent quality and really transformed the kitchen. I saved a bit by going for a wood block laminate worktop and I'm told I will save myself considerable upkeep effort! I also replaced the oven with a single AEG oven, the hob with what seemed like a decent Belling one and also a new extractor fan.

I saved a decent chunk of money by doing the following myself:

-Completely removed and dumped the old kitchen (bar plumbing/electrics), it really wasn't difficult and I had no issues at all although I'm sure every property will be different
-Every morning I would take the fitters waste from the day before to the community skip on my way to work - This saved my fitter having to hire any kind of skip
-Laid the flooring myself over a weekend when the fitter was ready for it to go down - This was a first for me and really wasn't that difficult and the fitter left his tools for me to use also. If you take your time I think this is well within reach for an amateur DIY'er

I probably could have saved even more by doing the tiling myself although I wasn't comfortable doing that and didn't have the time anyway. I guess one could say just do everything yourself but as a minimum removing the old kitchen myself and handling the waste throughout probably saved me close to £1000 off the quote i received originally.
  • Try looking at ex display units - lots of showrooms change displays regularly, and you can grab a bargain
