Changing key meter

Options
My boyfriend and I are due to complete on our first house this Friday, eek! :)
Currently there is a key meter being used in the house, however we would rather have a credit meter installed. I'm after some advice from anyone who has made this change and how you went about doing it please.

Any advice is useful as we are not sure at all!
Thanks in advance.

  • You contact the current supplier and arrange for them to do it.

Make sure that when you get in the house you register with the existing energy supplier and get your own key. Do not just continue using the previous owners key as there may be arrears on it.

as said above, once you've registered with your supplier you can request a credit meter from them or look around for a better deal with another supplier and request them to change the meter.

It's 10 years since we did it and got the existing supplier to do the meter change and then we swapped suppliers immediately afterwards.

Congratulations on getting on the housing ladder! As well as following the good advice above, I would advise photographing every meter you can find when you arrive - gas, electric and water. An electric meter may have three readings (r1, r2, total) if it's an Economy 7 meter.

As advised make sure you get a new key meter in your name and if the current supplier is one of the smaller suppliers they may not be able to change your meter to a credit one so you may need to change to one of the bigger suppliers to get your meter changed.
Once you have your credit meter than you can switch to whoever you want.

My oldest was in the same boat in the summer - set up account with CURRENT supplier & get new keys, once accounts set up ask for change to standard credit meter, wait!! It does take a couple of months, so be patient and be prepared to chase regularly. Also, good advice above about photos of current and new meters when installed - the new ones won't always start at zero ;)

He started it off in August and finally got the new meters in December....

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
