Mini LED projectors, eBay

Options
I was thinking of a mini LED projector for use with the HMDI output from a games console in a bedroom.

These things seem cheap. They claim to be full HD. But the brightness could be an issue. I assume total darkness is required, no problem with that in the evening until April then.

Any ideas?

    Mixed reviews.

Id assume these where more for novelty use. Ie playing mariokart once a year on a big screen. As a replacement for a TV i cant see it being very good.

doesnt actually look that bad on here....

    They are absolute junk

50 lumens and a native resolution of 320x180 :rotfl:

I imagine the lag trying to play a computer game would be unusable.
They are that price for a reason ;)

50 Lumens, means they are unusable unless it's pitch black. For comparison a GU10 bulb is about 300 Lumens

Native resolution of 320*180 means they are barely usable for graphics and maybe movies. Even assuming it does exceptional upscale (fat chance for that at this price point) any game from the last decade will look like a dogs dinner.

Nice toy for £25, nothing more.

Thanks, they do seem terribly poor.

I wonder how much a decent one would cost? What sort of lumens level would be required?

    Been there, done that.
This is the one I ended up keeping: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07S72M2X3/ (I paid around £130).
First of all, all the Lumens are rubbish. That's just a number that is nowhere close to ANSI Lumens. Mine says 4500 Lumens, but it's probably something like 1500.

The problems you will encounter with sub-£500 projectors:

    - Picture distortion: if the projector is not exactly level, it's impossible to get a picture that is in focus everywhere. The only way of having a good focus is to have the picture distorted (if it's not aligned with the wall/projection screen)
    - Video and audio lag (99% of them are unusable with games and if they have really poor quality, also with films because the sound is not in sync with the picture
    - Low fps for higher resolutions (like full HD)
    - Check the native resolution, sometimes they are advertised as '4K' when they are '4K-compatible', which means nothing.
    - Lumens: don't trust the advertised lumens. Those projectors are usually good only for dark or relatively dark rooms.
    - Reviews: DON'T TRUST THEM. Many, many sellers promise 'free stuff' if you leave a good review, like a free (cheap) screen or a 'cash back' offer.

I bought the projector that I mentioned earlier and I am fairly happy with it, considering how much I paid and what I need it for, but it took me 3 purchases (one of which was another projector, exact same model, that had dead pixels) to get an acceptable projector.
