The surveyor have done their job. It's not anybody else's responsibility to inform you of this information. The onus is on you to retrieve this information which your surveyor has done.

With any house in the future you'll now ask more questions before offering, and that's good. However, estate agents and vendors will at best be economic with the truth and at worst lie. The simple reality is that when house-buying, your surveyor (if not a new-build) and your solicitor will investigate the property you've chosen and report back to you. At that point there may well be things you realise about it which mean you don't want it anymore, but the investigations will have cost you money. However, if they uncover something which affects the value of the house then better that than go ahead blindly and lose far more money.
