New car/old car tipping point

New front tyres can wait a little while. They’re down to 3mm but not an MOT fail.
Considering the front tyres do most of the work (brake, steer, grip the road, deliver power) and at 3mm are going to be pretty rubbish in winter weather, unless you're strapped for cash, I'd invest in them now.
They are not there simply to pass an MOT, the two small bits of rubber about the size of your palms in contact with the road are there to preserve your life.
If the existing ones are more than 5 years old, you'll probably notice a reduction in road noise with new ones too.Signature on holiday for two weeks0 -
Update: After spending £64 on a new battery, cleaning the EGR valve myself, sticking a double dose of Redex in the tank and driving the engine hard (once warmed) for the last 200 miles, the car sailed through its MOT today. My local mechanic had a good look at the supposedly corroded brake lines and having estimated something like £200-300 over the phone last week, has determined nothing needs doing because they are coated in plastic and the only "corrosion" is in fact surface dirt, with some minor corrosion where the coating doesn't reach but only superficial corrosion.
I'll keep monitoring the tyres, they'll probably need replacing soon and if we're in for some rubbish weather, they can be done at short notice.
Thanks for all the advice.0 -
