I booked duty free online to get on the plane coming home unfortunately Thomas cook went bust I tried to get my money back through the case but they said I couldn't so I tried to get it back through my bank as I paid by debit card they said I couldn't does this mean I have lost my money

If you paid by a credit card you can use s75 of the Consumer Credit Act and claim a breach of contract on the part of TC, if you used a debit card you can request a chargeback. Technically the CAA only applies for claims over £100 but if you paid less, and have a clear receipt to prove payment, many banks, but not all, will refund as a matter of goodwill0
