50k to invest

We have had 50k in an building society account for the last 5 years earning next to nothing in interest. Want it to earn some money for us and really have no idea at all what to do with it. quite fancy stocks and shares, but again totally clueless and all the horror stories where people's money has just disappeared though smart alec traders ect, am quite worried about investing
So any advice is welcome, what would you do with 50k?
Just one footnote, might need some of the money late this year, early next year to fund our final house buying move.

Your last comment is the significant one - investing is only a sensible proposition for long term money that you won't need to touch for at least five years and preferably ten or more, so is unsuited for money needed within a year or so.

In terms of what others would do with (the rest of) £50K, it's pretty unlikely that many others on here will be in exactly the same boat as you so it all depends on a range of factors, such as existing savings/investments, property/mortgage, pension provision, attitude to risk, age, job stability, dependents, health, etc, etc....
