Council Tax

Hi All

help needed please! i have brought my first house and just need a little insight on Council Tax! i registered with the local council that i am the new owner of the property and did say that i am living in single occupancy! had a council tax bill come through and its nearly £400 for the next three months!! i looked through the letter and it still has the full amount of a band C property for council tax!

When would my single occupancy discount start? and does anybody have any advice about this?

Thanks in advance for any information! :)

The occupancy discount starts at once so call the Council and ask them to issue a revised bill.

Also, you are entitled to pay it monthly so if you would like this facility ask them. The most convenient is by monthly direct debit but it doesn't have to be.

This should be in the Cutting Tax forum, not Credit Cards.

Just call them and have it changed.

However direct debit may not be an option for this financial year as there are only just over two months left (for anyone on 10 month payment terms their last payment will be imminent).

You may need to pay by a different method until April, but the Council will advise.

Perhaps the OP is as competent at completing Council Tax forms as they are at selecting the appropriate forum to post in.

This really isn't the right part of the forum for council tax queries.
But as you're here...... Assuming you're in England, you're looking for prices in April 1991, when the tax was introduced, not 1997. You could check the local newspaper archives to look at the property pages for that time to see what properties were selling for. An easier way is just to compare your current band with those of similar properties in close proximity to yours to see if they match.

If you are in Wales, the valuation date was 12 years later - 1 April 2003.
