Switching from Bulb to E.on and smart meters..

Options
Hi all,

Here's hoping you can help as E.on customer service wouldn't answer my question. I recently (November) had a smart meter from Bulb. I'm now moving to E.On, should this meter still work with them or will they most likely want to come and swap everything again? I'm pretty sure my current meter is gen 2 as it replaced a pre-existing meter from 2016.

Thanks,

Rik.

  • Off course it will work.

Instead of asking the business, you come and ask strangers?

If you'd read my post you'd see I had asked them and they wouldn't or couldn't answer despite me pointing out the facts in my original post so yes, I came on here to ask strangers as I'm sure I'm not the first person to have made this move.

    Thanks for stopping by.

It will only work if EoN and Bulb get their act together and transfer the meter over properly with the DCC. HOWEVER, it remains to be seem whether they have the processes or even the will to do it at the moment.

There is a plan to make it happen and OFGEM are twisting their arms but all the parties involved need to have it all worked out between them, which is still "work in progress".

Until its all resolved, possibly in a year or two (or probably longer judging by whats been happening so far) I suggest you learn to read the meter, send in the readings and check your bills properly, the same way as you did before you had a smart meter.

The world wont stop rotating if your meter doesn't get reactivated in its smart mode, it will still record how much energy that you use but you'll have to put a bit more effort into reading it and checking the bills, which TBH, is no bad thing as you'll be more aware of what you use and whether your bills are up to date.

If the bloke at Eon doesn't know the answer then it's unlikely that the collective wisdom of this forum will and in the end does it really matter.

I sometimes (not often) feel sorry for the suppliers and especially the Customer Services as they are being pressured by OFGEM & the government pushing down and the customer pushing up and they've got to deal with the DCC and other suppliers over whom they have no control.

Hello carguy143 and many thanks for switching to us.

As the switch is in progress, I suspect we haven't yet received the full metering technical details. These come over from the previous supplier as part of the switch. Once we have this information, we'll be better placed to tell you more about the meter.

If the existing smart meter is a SMETS2, it'll retain its smart features following the switch. If it's the earlier SMETS1, it'll revert to a classic meter until we can upgrade it.

We've started upgrading SMETS1 meters so they can be managed in the same way as SMETS2 including being able to send us readings automatically. This includes smart meters fitted by another company and now supplied by us. There's no need for a technician to visit as upgrades are done remotely. We're looking to complete this work by the end of the year.

Hope this explains carguy143. Please let me know if you need any more information as happy to help.
