You were already in negative equity, it has simple been brought forward to now rather than when you were due to hand the car back. I know it doesnt help now but if you knew a situation like this would have given you a financial headache then gap insurance was a must.0

Negative equity would not have impacted the OP had they gone the full term and handed the car back. Rest of what you say is correct though.0 -
Thank you everyone I understand my position more clearly now. I will be purchasing gap insurance without delay with my next car. Lesson learned !0
