Removed back boiler for TV wall, blocking up, what now?

Hi all.

Around 2 years ago we had our back boiler removed and a combi installed upstairs, we then just filled the hole where the fire was with some logs to make it look 'pretty'.

However, we now want to block it up and put a TV on the wall. We had a quote from a carpenter who said he could put a MDF sheet over the chimney brest, bring it out a little (like a stud wall) but only a little bit to just for electrics behind, and then cut a space where the TV would go and attach bracket and a floating shelf or cabinet to the wall.

I have included a photo of what is within our fireplace, is it ok to place MDF sheet over this? I heard about venting, is this required in our scenario? I have also included a photo of the current surrond.

Is using MDF the best solution for this? Any other ideas or advice welcome?

Thank you.

When a chimney is closed off it is advisable to have ventilation to avoid the risk of damp.
  • When I bricked up a fireplace 23 years ago, I skimmed it over with plaster and fitted a marble fireplace in front of it. For ventilation, I fitted a pepper pot cowl on the chimney. No problems whatsoever with damp patches etc on the chimney breast, over the last 27 years.
