Sounds like a different sort of scheme to what I am used to. I'm over 70 and mine has a widows pension but no lump sum. Had I died in service then there was an immediate payment to my widow before her pension kicked in.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • Ah right. Yeah I’ve looked into it a bit. There’s a lump sum payable up to 10 year’s annual pension, minus what they have taken. So it’s minus the 7 years he’s been retired, leaving 3 years payable as a lump sum.

Also described as 'a guarantee period'. I suspect the pension scheme doesn't have a valid expression of wish/nomination form and (absolutely correctly) is seeking any information which might help them to make a decision on who receives this lump sum. The will, if there is one, is the obvious candidate. Whether or not you feature in it won't necessarily change the scheme's decision as to who gets the lump sum, but they do need to be seen to make proper enquiries as to other potential recipients.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!
  • Thank you Marcon. I went to visit his partner today. I didn’t know what her reaction would be, but she was very friendly. We had a brew and a chat. She was first to hear from the pension, she told them about me, as she knew of me because I’m in the will. I’m entitled to very little and nothing until anything happened to her. I’m down for 10% of the house, her son 90%. She’s a lovely woman and I wish nothing on her and for 10% I certainly won’t be chasing that up in the future.
