Ford Ecosport 2017 1ltr- bubbling coolant

Took short journey today, heard continuous rattle coming from the offside under the bonnet. Arriving home, opened bonnet to see Coolant Reservoir bubbling vigorously after engine was turned off. Is this normal for 2 half year old car 17,000 mileage?

Depends what you mean by normal. It's a relatively commonly reported sign of forthcoming engine failure in ecoboost engines, related to failing degas hoses.

    I wouldn't drive it anywhere.

  • Hi Arklight, thanks for this. Last week had engine warning light come on amber, Dealership checked on Monday last and found nothing wrong yet the code checked by the RAC gave - DTC: P007C,Turbocharger (TC) intercooler temperature sensor , bank 1 - circuit low reading. Dealership did not identify this however. Are these 2 events related?

You really need to read through that forum and ask for advice there. There are people who've had 2, 3, or even more blown engines that the dealers assured them were fine. Bubbling coolant and rattling is a very common late warning with these engines.

    Almost certainly, yes.

It's still under warranty (assuming it's been serviced to spec so far), so get it to the dealer ASAP. Unless they're very close, get it recovered. Don't drive it until you've spoken to them, and unless they say "Yep, you're fine to continue driving, and we won't hold any further damage against you"...

And if you get chance video the problem and post it to a forum.

Coolant only boils when the system has a problem. Either circulation such as failed water pump, blocked water galleries etc or cooling such as failed cooling fan and associate sensors.

Ecoboost engines' coolant reservoirs apparently do bubble under normal conditions (according to Ford). Nevertheless, all the people who've had cooked engines reported the bubbling happening first when it hadn't before. Bubbling and ratting together is a really bad sign. Combined with the warning light I wouldn't be driving it.

And they need to say that in writing/an email, not just the work experience kid speaking on the 'phone ;)
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))
  • Thanks all, all sounds a bit scary now. Especially now there are no warning lights for any of this on the dash.

Try the link to see if you can get to the hidden menu which will tell you the engine temperature.

My car has an engine oil temperature gauge and at this time of year doesn't get much above 90 degrees.

That is a video which is mostly in tagalog by a man who has a chicken in his passenger seat. I certainly don't recommend following his advice, if only because it involves the OP starting the engine.

If it is the, by now well documented, coolant failure issue then the rattling is due to one or more pistons having warped due to being baked.
