External hard drive uses USB 3.0 question???

    As mentioned by others, I would be gobsmacked if an 8 year PC didn't have USB 2.0 ports at the very least - especially one capable of running Windows 7.

    I do wonder if perhaps there is a driver issue, but I think it's more the fact you might be using a port at the front or top of the case. I must admit, I've never had issues powering USB hard drives using these ports, but I have heard of problems doing so caused by either poor or budget wiring.

    I think you should first post your full machine make and model number. If it doesn't have an obvious markings, then running HWiNFO, as advised above, can help to identify your system's particulars.
