Need a new car so been saving up and looking around and seen a Honda Civic 1.6 from a dealership not too far from me. It's up for £795 this is going to be my main car, daily car to work, shops and just daily day to day commutes.

Now is has 5 months MOT but checking history of mot to get a picture of the work done on it etc. This bit concerns me a little.

It's only done 2k since last mot and average around 18 for age of the car.
Advisory Notice issued:

*Rear brake pipe corroded, covered in grease or other material all (1.1.11 (c))

*Offside rear outer vehicle structure is corroded but structural rigidity is not significantly reduced sill (6.1.1 (c) (i))

*Offside rear service brake fluctuating, but not excessively (1.2.1 (e))

Is this buy worth it? Roughly how much is it going to cost t put it right? I'm going to be keeping this car for about 2-3 years

Comments

  • The corroded brake pipe could be okay. if not, a decent local dealer would maybe take 150-200 for replacing it. Maybe less if it's just a small brake pipe.

Service brake will be the handbrake, may require a clean and adjust depending on if its brake discs or drums on the rear.

Wouldn't worry too much about a rotten sill.Although a more strict mot tester could fail it

Only just under 9600 miles a month, 2400 miles per week? Its a banger, with work needed at next MOT. Buy privately at that price and go for 1 years MOT

It's an £800 shed. You're keeping it until it dies... 2-3yrs is possible, but I really wouldn't bet on it.

None of those are things to particularly worry about at the moment - in that context - but the sill rot is the start of the death of the car. Cleaning and painting won't slow anything down, because it comes from inside. Cavity wax might, but you'll probably find that there's moisture getting in through a cracked seam or rot that you can't see.

The brake is probably an oval drum. If ever you get the rear brakes done, swap the drum at the same time.

The brake pipe might actually be rot, or it might be grease to prevent it rotting. You need to look. Again, if you're getting the rear brakes done... But if one pipe's rotten, it's probably not alone.

Sounds like the previous person used it as a shed too, if they've done 67k miles in a year?!

I'm all for cheap motoring but I'd probably look for another runabout to buy, as the mileage sounds crazy. Are you sure it's right? A lot of websites as well as the DVLA will tell you the MOT history and mileages for free... maybe check a few sources? Don't know if I'm allowed to post links but I often use instantcarcheck(.)co.uk or freecarcheck.co.uk.

    Edit: seems not

Move on to the next one. Get 12 months MOT, then if does fail the MOT you’ve had at least a year out of it.

anything with corrosion I would run a mile. Buy PRIVATELY at that price
  • 795 from a dealer? That’s probably a 3-400 quid car with dealers profit on top. He’s not fixed any of that stuff because it eats his profits. Walk away, get something with 12 months ticket on, and look for a private sale not a dealer sale at that price point.

1 absolutely isn't a problem currently. Covered in grease would suggest it's been waxoyled or similar and there for looked after. If rust then you could get a wire brush and take it off or you could carry on. How much would you expect to pay to correct this cos there is a range of remedies.
