Is a 45 minute driver too long?

It's an automatic, in decent condition and it's about 15 minutes rural roads, 40 minutes motorway. Pretty chilled driver, don't really mind sitting in my car with the heating on and music playing etc.
Do a calc to make sure you can afford the extra fuel as it will gobble up some of that extra £2 an hour. But as you've alluded that this may open up future opps for you - and you're likely to be able to tolerate the drive, then sounds like a good plan0 -
My commute is 30 mins on the way to work, but up to 2 hours on the way home....
Got to love rush hour???
So look st it like a extra 2 hours at work 45 mins each way given the odd time the M/way will be busy.Life in the slow lane0 -
There will be extra motoring costs and an extra 50 minutes per day to add to your working week.0

Before you decide, is it definitely 45 minutes during the rush hour? Have you driven the route at the time of day you'll be going to/from work?
Just ask because what looks like a reasonable drive can sometimes be a night-mare during peak times.0 -
No way I'd add an extra 20min commute for £2 per hour. The extra pay will barely cover your extra fuel and time. That's an extra half day a week (4.5 hrs) at the wheel. The longer the drive, the more chance of delays too.0

I'd guess 45 minutes is probably about average.0

AMEN!
I get agencies calling trying to convince me that 'Oxford is ONLY 45 minutes from my door'... Yes it is at around half 10 on a Wednesday morning. But to arrive by 9am I would have to set off at half 6 absolute latest!

Having said that my current 'commute' including school run is 2 hours, but about 45 mins of that is with the child in the car.
I second the audiobooks/podcasts idea. Alternatively, you can do distance learning using CDs or podcasts (which will improve your 'employability') whilst you commute. I did this when I commuted into London and Back in the early 2000s, pre internet on trains and smartphones.

Regarding your Motorway commute, it's not one that gets congested/has accidents on it? Our local one is the M1 (J17 to J 13) and people seem unable to use this without crashing on it. which has a knock-on effect of congesting all the local roads too.

But as others have said 45 mins is not unreasonable for a commute.

Assuming the OP works 40 hours a week, there is another £80, if the OP were on £8.21 an hour that would be 10 extra hours money for 4 1/2 hours more work.
This will all be taxed at 20% so really an extra £64
Then there is petrol, maybe an extra half gallon a day, say £14 a week
Overall, the OP is up by £50 a week, for working an extra half a day.
Comes down to whether he wants to make £50 for an extra half day.
My commute is 40 mins in the morning, nearer an hour at night, and as curlygirl1971 says, the older I get, the more I resent it, especially the going home.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

i would possibly consider a longer commute but with the intention of moving sooner rather than later0

Currently debating whether to do exactly the same.
In my case, the increase in salary is very substantial, and I would save a lot of money in commuting cost. I currently travel around an hour by train/underground at a cost of around £350/month. Commuting 80miles everyday by electric car will cost just £125/month (this could drop to just £25/month if I moved to allow home charging instead of using the more expensive public chargers at the office).
I've done the journey outside of rush hour and it was about 1hour. Google suggests it could be anywhere between 1hr-1hr40min in the morning. Going to track it this week each morning and see what sort of times it estimates real time....0
